How to decorate timeless kids rooms

Decorating a kids rooms opens up a whole new world of exciting design possibilities. It's the perfect excuse to be as bold, fun or magical as you want. Whether it's a girls room, a boys bedroom or a nursery, a child’s surroundings can have a huge impact on how they grow and develop. It’s important to make children’s living spaces as comfortable and fun as possible.

Whatever the space you have available for your child’s room, it’s easy to create the perfect space for rest and play. But challenge comes when we take into consideration that the room will need to grow and change with your kids. You should make sure that when deciding on a style for your child’s bedroom you don't end up with a room that your child is going to outgrow too quickly.

There is lots of inspiration around to move us to create the perfect room that ranges from the nursery to the teen bedroom, but the idea of redecorating the room once every 2-4 years is not very appealing to a lot of people.

Here are some tips on how to decorate a timeless kids room, the room that can grow with your child and you’ll not spend a fortune to redecorate every few years.

When people start to think about decorating their kids room they often go for themes of superheroes or cartoon characters. But time flies with kids and their interests change so quickly that it is not really worth to do room in that way.

Of course that racing car bed looks cool and that princess carriage bed looks adorable, but for how long? Maybe not even for a year?

Picking a neutral colour palette for your walls, curtains, blinds and carpet is essential to create a neutral base for your child to stamp their personality on. By using a sophisticated and elegant colour scheme that mainly contains neutral colours and not overwhelming the room with brightly coloured paint, you’ll get the base that will resist the effects of time.

If you really love colour you can bring it in with bedding, cushions, toys, rugs, artworks… Things that you can easily change with time according to your child’s age, interests or likes.

Choose good quality furniture with simple and clean design, that can last. When we talk about beds, these days you can buy cots that are easily converted in to a toddler bed and later into a junior bed. If you have an older child go for a solid wood or neutral colour bed with simple lines.

Good book shelves can last a lifetime if we choose the right one. Kids have so much stuff from the beginning, so it is worth investing in nice storage and shelves. The simpler the furniture, the more flexible it is.

Don’t forget to design with your child in mind. What they like to do, how they are using the space, what activities they do in the room. Spaces need to be practical too. Toddlers need lot of floor space while older kids need space where they can sit to do their homework and space to play with their friends.

Also include your child in the process. Let them decide on some furniture or colours. The room in the end needs to reflect their personality.

When the base of your child’s room is neutral, when your furniture is good quality, when you plan the space so good that it’s practical to use, then every few years you won’t need to spend too much to refresh your child’s room and it’ll be the happy space that grows and changes with your child.
