How to create a cosy reading nook for kids

Tips + products

Bring out your child’s inner bookworm

Want to encourage an early love of reading? Have a bookworm in the family? Or a struggling reader you want to encourage? Reading is an adventure and creating a beautiful and inviting space dedicated to reading is a great way to encourage the kids to spend more time enjoying reading and playing.

There are a few things that you should consider while planning your cosy reading nook: location, comfy seat, good display of books and light.

While older children might appreciate a quiet respite from a busy household, little ones often prefer to be where the action is. If you have toddlers, adding a comfortable reading corner to your family room just might do the trick and that way the reading nook will be used more often, while for older kids consider creating a dedicated reading nook in their own room. Make it a multi purpose nook where kids can play in it and also come back to read.

Comfy seat

Bean bags, comfy mats, lots of cushions or a lovely armchair are just a few options that you can choose from while planning around the space that you have.

Book display

Place the books so they are visible and easy to reach. There are so many different options for book shelves, but if you’re on a budget Ikea have some cute spice racks and picture ledges that can easily be transformed into great book display shelves.

Make sure there is enough good light in the nook. Add some fun lights if needed.

Reading to, with and in front of your children, especially in the early years, is critical to their development as readers. And the fun and bonding with your kids is something that you all will remember.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss
